Compression Stockings
Compression stockings are the mainstay of treating vein disease and preventing complications after procedures on the leg (both surgical and non-surgical). Compression stockings are specialized stockings which have a gradient of pressure, where the greatest pressure is applied at the ankle. The pressure decreases as one moves up the stocking to the calf and knee. Typically, we prescribe knee-high compression, though we use thigh-high wraps and compression after certain procedures.
For those who spend lots of time on their feet at work, compression stockings help reduce the heaviness, swelling and tiredness that comes at the end of the day. In fact, Dr. Andrew wears them every day in his practice.
Compression stockings, despite their ability to reverse many symptoms of venous disease, they do have their drawbacks. Compression stockings
Must be used daily to be effective.
They only help when they are actively compressing the leg and aiding circulation.
Can be difficult to put on and take off.
The same tightness that makes them effective, makes them difficult to get around the ankle when putting them on or taking them off.
They are not covered by insurance (and expensive)
Despite costing more than $40 per pair, compression stockings are a valuable investment that will help you for years to come.

Dr. Andrew typically recommends stockings with 20-30 mm Hg pressure for his patients. While lower pressures are helpful, the higher pressure gives greater assistance to your legs. He even practices what he preaches, wearing stockings every day to work!
